From an early age, Werend was exposed to classical and folk music within a musical family. Once he chose the saxophone, it quickly became clear that he wanted to further explore and refine the instrument's tradition; the move into improvisation and jazz followed swiftly.
After studying jazz saxophone at the Ghent Conservatory, Werend became a fixture of the Ghent and Belgian music scenes. He does not limit himself to the saxophone, however, but also delves into clarinet, flute, keyboards, electronics, and production—in short, a life fully dedicated to music.
In his musical research he's always looking for experiment—whether it involves using effects on his saxophone, delving in synthesizers, juggling with genres or assimilating various folkloric playing styles and instruments—he does it with such a flair that nobody questions it.
His projects have garnered acclaim and awards: he was named 'Jong Jazz Talent Gent' 2022 with Dishwasher_, reached the finals of Soundtrack 2024 and the BJAZZ International Contest 2025 with The Green Mean Machine, and won 'Jong Jazz Talent' 2024 with Kin Gajo. Through these projects, Werend has released several albums and undertaken successful tours.
